We have a new World Chess Champion - Ding Liren! New for arbiter friends is the Call of Interest for arbiters' positions in FIDE events 2023 is open! Then, there are events like the Issykkul Open Chess Festival in Kyrgyzstan, Abu Dhabi Chess Festival in UAE, 7th CSIT World Sports Games in Italy etc. For education, there is the Chess Symposium by ASEAN Chess Confederation & European Chess Union in Thailand. In news, we have Global Chess League announced Dubai as the venue for the inaugural edition!

There are currently not many tournaments for Mid-May locally, but towards the end of May, there is the Selangor Open & Challenger Tournament from 26th - 31st May at KL Gateway Mall. Despite the new venue, players will be playing in a hall, and for those who joined the GACC25 rapid, it's that same hall that will be used. Don't get missed out by registering now!
Then in June, there is the local CMC Mall June Chess Festival 2023 from 3rd - 5th June 2023 at MesaMall, Nilai, the Singapore Chess Festival 2023 from 4th - 11th June at Jurong Spring Community Club, and the newly released National Youth Chess Championship 2023 from 9th - 11th June at Universiti Teknologi Perak (the same venue for the 2022 edition), followed by the Guam International Open Tournament 2023 from 12th-18th June at Guam Reef Hotel, Guam.
Also happening in June is the 21st ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championship 2023 from 17th - 27th June at Asia Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand. Right after the ASEAN+ Age Group is the ASEAN Chess Series, a back-to-back tournament series starting from Chiang Mai, Thailand followed by Johor, Malaysia. And later on in October, Vientiane, Laos (details are to be announced)!
The tournament details are as followed, Thailand International Chess Open 2023 - ASEAN Chess Series - Chiang Mai from 28th June - 4th July at Empress Hotel, Chiang Mai, Thailand, followed by the 8th Johor International Chess Open 2023 - ASEAN Chess Series from 5th - 11th July at Fairview International School, Malaysia, the same venue that hosted the 7th Johor Open in December 2022. The total prize fund for Johor Open is RM135,000 equivalent to 30460 USD for the classical & rapid tournaments. Also, note that normally the Johor Open is held in December but this year it is being held in July alongside ASEAN Chess.
In June, there is also the 4th Sunway Chess Championship 2023 from 17th-18th June 2023 at Sunway University Jeffrey Cheah Hall, Selangor. It's a 2-day rapid & blitz event compromising of Team Rapid & Individual FIDE Blitz on 17th June, followed by Individual FIDE Rapid on 18th June with total prize money of over RM16.5K !!! Make sure to register fast!
In July, for international events, there is the Issykkul Open Chess Festival 2023 from 11th - 21st July 2023 at Recreation Center Solemar, Korumdu, Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan. The chess festival is divided into 3 tournaments, Issykkul Open A, B, and C, to show different rating groups categories.
The other event in July would be the Blue Chevaliers International Open 2023 from 23rd - 29th July at Novotel Phuket Resort, Thailand. It's a 9-round Swiss system tournament played over 7 days with a time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds. The comfortable capacity of the playing room is 100 players so make sure to register early! There are discounted room rates for players and a special Grandmaster Accommodation Offer, do check the regulations for the details. The Champion Prizes are as followed: Open Category: 1st 50,000 baht = 1450 USD, Female Category: 1st 12,000 baht = 348 USD, Senior Category: 1st 5,000 baht = 145 USD. Happening locally in July are mostly rapid events. Then a newly released event on 19th August, the [CMC] MyCatur Contest @ Mydin Tunjung, Kelantan Tournament.
In July, there is also the Keningau Open Chess Championship 2023 [FIDE Rated], in conjunction with World Chess Day. The tournament is from 22nd - 23rd July 2023 at Taman Bandukan, Riverside Resort, Sabah. It's a 9 rounds rapid event with a time control of 25 minutes plus 10 seconds increment. The champion prize of the event is an impressive RM3500!! Even the 2nd place itself is RM2000, and the 3rd place RM1000! If you're keen on joining the event, you may register here.
In the coming months, there is the Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival from the 14th - 25th August 2023. Note that there was a change in dates as it is now starting on 14th August instead of ending on. Another international event for the coming month of August & September, there is the 7th CSIT World Sports Games 2023 from 5th - 10th September at Centro Congressi Milano Marittima, Italy for rapid and blitz.
Also, a heads up that the Malaysian Chess Festival dates are from 26th August to 3rd September. The full details are not out yet as there are things pending confirmation, but we will share it once it's published!
Here, we found some exciting news that must be shared! The Call of Interest for arbiters' positions in FIDE events 2023 is out!!! For my dear arbiter friends, hope you take this chance to apply to stand a chance to get a FIDE event from around the world. You can apply here, be mindful that those who wish to apply are to be in the Panel List first, which means you would have to be a minimum of FA titled arbiter. The call of interest is open from April 24th 2023 to May 7th 2023, 23:59 CEST. You may read more about it here. And here is where you can check for the panel list, more about it in the FIDE Handbook.
For Chess Workshops & Education, as mentioned in the previous edition, there will be a FA Seminar Conducted By The Sandokan Chess Club in Sabah, Malaysia from 17th to 20th May 2023. The lecturer will be IA/IO Bunawan Bong of Indonesia, assisted by FA Charles Lucas of Malaysia. Register here for those who wish to become a FIDE Arbiter.
In early May, there are a few classical tournaments which have started, among which are the Big Rook Chess Festival 2023 in Bangkok Thailand, the Malaysian Chess Championship, Asian Zonal 3.3, & Baku Chess Festival. The following weekend, there is the 10th KLMaster U1800 Chess Championship 2023 from 13th - 14th May at Nexus Hotel, Shah Alam.
Here is the May Edition! This May edition feels like the start of a brand new Chess era as the crown for the World Chess Champion has been changed & crowned to Ding Liren. The final tiebreak match which decided the fate for this happened on 30th April and it couldn't have been any more thrilling for the chess world to witness such a feat!

Ding Liren makes history, becoming World Champion
As we all should know by now, when the new month came in, the chess world was greeted with a new World Chess Champion - GM Ding Liren of China. He's also made history for China by being the 1st Chinese player to win the World Chess Championship match! Scroll down below to view the video of the final moments which took place! We (mostly your IA Ellie) at Chess Clicks love the video and have watched it on repeat! It was such an emotional moment for the Chinese Superstar.
Recently concluded was an online tournament by the Asian Chess Federation, the 2023 Asian Mixed Doubles U-18 Team Championship, where the Indonesia team won gold! The closing ceremony was held on Friday 5/5 where General Secretary Hisham Al Taher graced the closing ceremony. We would like to wish all winners (& arbiters) congratulations to those who won prizes and for a successful show!

In our Chess News section, of course, the highlight of this month would be Ding Liren, our new World Chess Champion! His journey to the World Chess Championship is admirable! Take a look at the video above for the final moments in the tiebreak game when he becomes the new champion! He was overwhelmed with emotions as the fate of the game has been decided.

In the side event to the World Championship match, "Kazakhstan vs The World", Team World has come out victorious against Team Kazakhstan with a score of 34.5 : 29.5 for the rapid tournament. Team World was leading after the first day, having won in three out of the four rounds played and achieving a lead of 18,5 points to 13,5. The second day saw four more rounds being played in Astana’s International Financial Centre. In the end, after the blitz portion was also completed, Team World emerged as the winner of the event against Team Kazakhstan!
Lastly, we have the Global Chess League (GCL), which is a joint venture between FIDE and Tech Mahindra, as they announced Dubai as the venue for the inaugural edition. GCL is the world’s largest and first-ever league-styled chess tournament set to take place from June 21st, 2023, to July 2nd, 2023. The first edition of GCL will feature six teams with six players each, including a minimum of two female players and one icon player per team.
