47th Selangor Open & Challenger Chess Tournament Is Back!

The 47th Selangor Open & Challenger is back! This is Malaysia’s oldest chess tournament ever, coming quite close to half a century. This year the event will be held at KL Gateway Mall from the 26th to 31st of May. The Open event is also the Rajendra Manickawasagam Memorial Chess Championship as the main sponsor of the event. The champion for the Open section will win RM4000, whereas in the Challenger section, the champion will win RM1000.

For past Selangor Open Champion, WIM/WGM, IM/GM, will receive free entry towards the event & all GMs will be provided rooms on a twin-sharing basis in Westree Hotel, KL Sentral. The Cititel Mid Valley Hotel is also available at RM220/day (Superior Room for 2pax with Breakfast), for booking you may contact the organizer - DATCC, directly.

In the previous edition, the 46th Selangor Open in 2019, aka the year before covid, the Champion for the open section was IM Pascua Haridas from the Philippines, and in the Challenger section, Roy Marpaung from Indonesia. At that time, the main sponsors were the IGB Corporation Berhad, Patron Dato' Tan Chin Nam Foundation and its official hotel & venue was Cititel MidValley. There is a 20% discount for those who register & pay before the 1st of May. And for our OKU (Disabled) friends, there is a 25% discount for those who register & pay before the 1st of May.

In the Challenger section, there is a 25% discount for schools that sends a minimum of 4 players & pays by 1st of May. In the Open section, there is a 20% discount for IPT (University) that sends a minimum of 4 players & pays by 1st of May.

Registration closes after the 15th of May, which after that it'll be subject to the organizer to accept with a penalty of a double entry fee.

KL Gateway Mall has been very active & supportive in hosting chess tournaments. The GACC had their rapid event there, and later many organizers took the opportunity to have events there over the weekend as well.

The mall is linked to a LRT, KL Gateway - Universiti. The mall is a 5 minutes drive away from Mid Valley Mall/Cititel Hotel, which is about 2.5km away.
