The upcoming tournament in Malaysia would be the Selangor Open & Challenger Tournament from 26th - 31st May at KL Gateway Mall. The registration is now closed, but those who still wish to play can contact the organizer - Mr. Hamid. The players list for the Open category & Challenger category has been released.
Then in June, there is the local CMC Mall June Chess Festival 2023 from 3rd - 5th June 2023 at MesaMall, Nilai, the Singapore Chess Festival 2023 from 4th - 11th June at Jurong Spring Community Club where the player's list is now out on chessresults!
Also happening in June is the 21st ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championship 2023 from 17th - 27th June at Asia Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand. Right after the ASEAN+ Age Group is the ASEAN Chess Series, a back-to-back tournament series starting from Chiang Mai, Thailand followed by Johor, Malaysia. And later on in October, Vientiane, Laos (details are to be announced)!
The tournament details are as followed, Thailand International Chess Open 2023 - ASEAN Chess Series - Chiang Mai from 28th June - 4th July at Empress Hotel, Chiang Mai, Thailand, followed by the 8th Johor International Chess Open 2023 - ASEAN Chess Series from 5th - 11th July at Fairview International School, Malaysia, the same venue that hosted the 7th Johor Open in December 2022. The total prize fund for Johor Open is RM135,000 equivalent to 30460 USD for the classical & rapid tournaments. Also, note that normally the Johor Open is held in December but this year it is being held in July alongside ASEAN Chess.
Locally in June, there is also the 4th Sunway Chess Championship 2023 from 17th-18th June 2023 at Sunway University Jeffrey Cheah Hall, Selangor. It's a 2-day rapid & blitz event compromising of Team Rapid & Individual FIDE Blitz on 17th June, followed by Individual FIDE Rapid on 18th June with total prize money of over RM16.5K !!! Make sure to register fast! The name list has also been released on chessresults - Rapid, Blitz, Team.
In July, for international events, there is the Issykkul Open Chess Festival 2023 from 11th - 21st July 2023 at Recreation Center Solemar, Korumdu, Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan. The chess festival is divided into 3 tournaments, Issykkul Open A, B, and C, to show different rating groups categories.
The other event in July would be the Blue Chevaliers International Open 2023 from 23rd - 29th July at Novotel Phuket Resort, Thailand. It's a 9-round Swiss system tournament played over 7 days with a time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds. The comfortable capacity of the playing room is 100 players so make sure to register early! There are discounted room rates for players and a special Grandmaster Accommodation Offer, do check the regulations for the details. The Champion Prizes are as followed: Open Category: 1st 50,000 baht = 1450 USD, Female Category: 1st 12,000 baht = 348 USD, Senior Category: 1st 5,000 baht = 145 USD. Happening locally in July are mostly rapid events. There is the [CMC] MyCatur Contest Mydin 2023 on 8th July 2023 at Mydin Seremban 2, Negeri Sembilan, the Aspiration Chess Championship 2023 on 15th July 2023 at AIPS, Plaza Damansara Utama, PJ, and 3rd 3Damansara Chess Tournament 2023 from 15th - 16th July 2023 at 3Damansara Mall, Selangor, and [CMC] MesaMall July Chess Festival 2023, a 2-day event that has an individual age group event, and an Open Team event with the champion prize of RM1200.
In July, there is also the Keningau Open Chess Championship 2023 [FIDE Rated], in conjunction with World Chess Day. The tournament is from 22nd - 23rd July 2023 at Taman Bandukan, Riverside Resort, Sabah. It's a 9 rounds rapid event with a time control of 25 minutes plus 10 seconds increment. The champion prize of the event is an impressive RM3500!! Even the 2nd place itself is RM2000, and the 3rd place RM1000! If you're keen on joining the event, you may register here.
In August, there is the Klana Beach Resort Chess Carnival, a 3-days event in Negeri Sembilan with classical, rapid, & blitz games! And on 19th August, the [CMC] MyCatur Contest @ Mydin Tunjung, Kelantan Tournament.
In the coming months, there is the Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival from the 14th - 25th August 2023. Note that there was a change in dates as it is now starting on 14th August instead of ending on. In September, there is the 7th CSIT World Sports Games 2023 from 5th - 10th September at Centro Congressi Milano Marittima, Italy for rapid and blitz. There is also the ASEAN Chess Series - SG Rapid on 9th September, & AMK Rapid on 10th September, both in Singapore, each with a prize fund of $6000.
Also, a heads up that the Malaysian Chess Festival dates are from 26th August to 3rd September. The full details are not out yet as there are things pending confirmation, but we will share it once it's published!
In Chess News, our recent Malaysian Chess Championship has ended in Taiping Perak, and Malaysia Crowns A Returning National Champion And A New Women Champion! The picture above shows FM Lim Zhuo Ren (right) as the returning champion, with the Chief Arbiter - FA Najib, and our new National Women Champion - Ainul Mardhiah! It's a marvelous feat for 13-year-old Ainul Mardhiah, who has autism, to be crowned our New National Women Champion!
Also in Women Chess news, the final leg of the Women's Grand Prix has begun in Cyprus on 15th May. Above is the picture from the opening ceremony. Currently, 4 rounds have already been played with many games drawn in Round 4, with the only win from Aleksandra Goryachkina, also being the last game to finish for the round.
The Asia Zonal 3.2 in Bangladesh [right picture] has been completed, Bangladesh IM Mohammad Fahad Rahman won the honor of becoming the undefeated champion in the open section of the Bangabandhu Asian Zone-3.2 Chess Championships, qualifying for the FIDE World Cup Chess-2023. In the Women's section, Bangladesh’s WCM Jannatul Ferdous won the honor of being the undefeated champion.
In the Asia Zonal 3.3 in Jakarta [left picture], the winner is GM Bilguun Sumiya of Mongolia winning a ticket to the World Cup! In the women's section, the champion is WGM Vo Thi Kim Phung of Vietnam! You can visit their official website for more details, and here for the tournament pictures.

Next, the FIDE Chess in Education Commission is holding "Preparation of Teachers" courses on June 2-4 and June 9-11, 2023. Ideal for teachers, chess educators, and beginner and advanced players who have a basic knowledge of chess and experience working with children. And lastly, the Chess Symposium by ASEAN Chess Confederation & European Chess Union in June in Bangkok, Thailand. Scroll below for the full list.

The 6th Sharjah Masters - one of the strongest events to take place, has now begun in the UAE in the world's biggest chess club! There are 3 sections to the tournament - Masters, Challengers, Futures. The Masters section contains players who are above 2500 rating, and the 78 players who are playing are all GM! Among those who are playing are Gukesh D, Amin Tabatabaei, Nodirbek Yakubboev, Nihal Sarin, Anton Korobov, Temur Kuybokarov, Esipenko Andrey, and even current Woman World Champion Ju Wenjun, and many more! Ju Wenjun started off the tournament greatly defeating Karthikeyan Murali (2627) in round 1, and Vidit Santosh Gujrathi (2731) in round 2 as black! In round 3, she will face GM Praggnanandhaa on board 1 (picture above).
In the Challengers section, there are 66 players participating, and among them is our current Malaysian Master - FM Lim Zhuo Ren, who is having a good tournament gaining rating points and having defeated an IM & a GM! The challengers section is for those rated 2000-2500. Lastly, there is the 1st Futures Section for those above 1500 but below 2000 with 62 players playing.

The Superbet Chess is also ongoing as part of the Grand Chess Tour, recently concluded in Romania is the Superbet Chess Classic where the world's top players, including newly crowned world champion - Ding Liren, and his contender Ian took part! Fabiano Caruana won the event with a grand $100,000 prize!
The next Superbet Chess will be held in Poland in a rapid & blitz format. The tournament is set to take place on May 21-25 at the Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw, Poland. Joining five ‘full players’ from the Grand Chess Tour, five wildcards, including world number one Magnus Carlsen, will make their way to the Polish capital.

The Asian Chess Federation has also released the Asian Continental in Kazakhstan in early June, & Eastern Asia Youth Championship in August, China.

In Thailand, there is the 1st The Rooky Chessmate International Chess Championship in July at Lantana Resort Hotel, Bangkok where you can literally PLAY & EARN money! Locally we have the National Youth Chess Championship in June at the University Technology Petronas (UTP), Perak, which is the same venue to host the 2022 edition. The name list for NYCC has been published on MCF's website. The next tournament would be the Guam International Open Tournament 2023 from 12th-18th June at Guam Reef Hotel, Guam.
There’s also the newly released 2023 Langkawi Open on 17th-18th June (a clashing date for the 4th Sunway Event) at MyAngkasa Akademi & Resort Langkawi, Kedah where the champion will stand a chance to win RM4000! Runner-up RM2500, and 3rd place RM1000! It’s a 2-days event and is only limited to 150 players, with a time control of 45 minutes for 8 rounds. Register early as registration closes on the 1st of June.
