Last Friday night on 17th November, we popped into The Royal Oak bar in Bangkok where every Friday night, locals, tourists, and chess enthusiasts gather to engage in intense chess matches. The chess battles are played on the upper floor of the English bar where banters and the sound of clocks being pressed can be heard.

The blitz night is organized by the Bangkok Chess Club. Players of all levels are welcome to join in the fun! Those in town can drop by from 7pm as the blitz will start at 8pm. Next week, they will be playing a FIDE-rated Blitz event, those interested can pop into the bar at night. More details can be found on the Bangkok Chess Club website or you may contact the organizer to enquire more.

12 people played in the blitz last night with a round-robin of 11 rounds! Among the players included 3 titled players, intermediate players, and beginners. FM Nicolas Grandadam from Switzerland emerged as champion with a full 11/11 points! Followed by regulars FM Ko Ko Ohn, and FM Poompong. Players from many countries were participating in the blitz, among the regulars were those from Thailand, Finland, England, and Myanmar, but last night's specials included Switzerland & Malaysia! Though your Malaysian IA did not exactly participate in the blitz, she did play a few casual games here & there!

Among the few casual games were of course with FM Nicolas himself! That's him in the pictures above. In one game, your IA launched an impressive 4 pawn attack on him, which inevitably failed but at least we tried!
