It feels like February has just started as this month is still filled with MANY events! Too many to count even! As Chinese New Year is literally around the corner, we would like to wish you a Happy Chinese New Year! May the Year of the Dragon bring much prosperity & pure happiness into your lives! *Fun note, our founder is a Dragon baby! 🐉
The MANY events that are jammed in February include the Bangi Blitz (10th Feb), Big Rook Tournament (10th Feb, Thailand), Dpulze CNY Open Tournament (11th Feb), Pahang Women Team Tournament (17th Feb), CMC Festival (17th - 18th Feb), WP KL Circuit Tournament (18th Feb), Putrajaya Chess Tournament (24th - 25th Feb), Double Bishop Youth Rapid (25th Feb, Thailand), & SO MANY MORE!
March is also seeing many events! Especially during its first weekend with multiple events clashing on the same dates. Among the tournaments in March are the 2024 Perth International Open from 1st - 4th March in Australia, the TCC Ultimate Clash 3.0 on 2nd - 3rd March with an impressive prize fund of RM13k+!!, and the Queens' Online Chess Festival by FIDE’s Women Commission from 9th - 30th March.
There are a few international events in April, namely classical events. In Thailand, there’s the 2nd Chess CAD Nakhon Nayok International Open 2024 from 5th - 9th April & the well-anticipated 21st Bangkok Chess Club Open from 13th - 21st April at Sheraton Hua Hin Resort & Spa. In Malaysia, there’s the 1st Edition Za’aba Open Classical 2024 from 27th - 28th April 2024 in Perak.
Towards the mid of 2024, Sunway has already released their 5th Sunway Chess Championship 2024 to be held on 15th - 16th June 2024. They have an impressive prize pool of RM17.5k! We’re saying hats off to them for managing to publish the tournament & open registration so early in the year! Those not in Malaysia better start booking your flights now as this will be one event you wouldn't like to miss!
Many chess workshops are being held during the school holidays. Those looking to improve their chess skills can surely benefit from it. In recent local chess news, Poh Yu Tian has made headlines as he wishes to seek funding to fulfill the dream of becoming Malaysia’s 1st Grandmaster! Excitement went down at the Tata Steels, as a four-player knockout tiebreak was played, and Wei Yi emerged as the winner for this year’s edition!
There’s also good news for arbiters! The call of interest for the 45th Chess Olympiad 2024 which will take place from the 10th to the 23rd of September 2024 in Budapest, Hungary. The call of Interest for arbiters is open for one month, from January 29th 2024 to February 29th 2024. And lastly, FIDE has released new policies regarding player’s title regulations.
