The 8th Johor International Chess Open will take place from 5th to 11th July at Fairview International School. The tournament has a total prize fund of RM135,000 which includes the classical & rapid tournaments.
The Johor Open Masters section has a total prize money of RM90,000 and RM35,000 in the Amateurs section. In the Johor Rapid, the prize fund for the Open is RM6500, while in the Challenger section, it’s RM3500.
This year's Johor Open is part of the ASEAN Chess Series, in collaboration with the ASEAN Chess Confederation. The Series begins in Chiang Mai, Thailand from 28th June - 4th July - the Thailand International Open, followed by the Johor Open.
The Johor Open has 2 sections, the Masters Section, & Amateur Section. The Masters Section is for players rated above 2000, whereas the Amateur Section is for those rated below 2200. The top 5 prizes for the Masters Section are as follows, the champion will win RM22,000, 2nd RM11,000, 3rd RM9000, 4th RM6500, 5th RM4500!! In the Amateur Section, the champion will win RM4000.
The Johor Rapid follows the same 2 sections format - Open, & Challengers. Players will play 7 rounds with 15 minutes to finish on 7th July. The Open champion will win RM1200, and the Challengers champion will win RM600.
The official hotel for the Johor Open is the Austin Park Hotel, as changed from the original prospectus from Berjaya Waterfront Hotel. The first 20 GMs above a certain rating will receive free entry and accommodation with breakfast! Those who book the hotel directly with the organizer will be provided free 2-way transfers for every round (hotel-venue-hotel).
